CLOSER VIEW

What We Like About our Work

MAKING SOMETHING FROM A TO Z BY HAND

As a creative and manual person, I like being able to produce something from A to Z. I find it very satisfying and somehow fascinating to be able to turn a piece of leather into something beautiful, useful and functional like these shoes.

FAST RETURN

Unlike other professions where it would take many months or years to receive the benefits of your work, or to finalize a project, here it can be very fast.

One doesn't need a very long practice to start making professional- looking shoes. We have students who do great after just a few pairs!
If a few hours are enough to make a pair of moccasins, in a few weeks, one could already start selling and be paid for their work...

NO EXPENSIVE AND ANNOYING MACHINES

I love sewing clothes, but I always get annoyed with sewing machines. One thing I really like about making moccasins is that I can do everything with just a few simple hand tools. They are cheap, reliable, and silent. I love my awl and my thick needles and would not exchange them for any kind of sewing machine...

BEING ABLE TO WORK ANYWHERE

Since we work with these simple tools, we can work anywhere. We don't need a special workshop or electricity; we can work on our knees or, even, standing with very little space... I really like this because traveling with a sewing machine is another story!

ENRICHING CUSTOMERS RELATIONSHIP

We don't sell custom-made shoes like we would sell bread.
Taking the time to finish the shoes on the market gives us the opportunity to connect a little more with our customers, and sometimes, have the chance to have deeper conversations and make interesting encounters.

We also get direct feedback from our customers, which is usually very positive and particularly motivating (especially at the beginning, when you might doubt yourself and encounter some difficulties.)

WORKING WITH OUR CHILDREN IN PLEASANT ENVIRONNEMENTS

Outdoor markets are often pleasant environments that are also socially and culturally interesting.
We like to be able to work with our children, at home and on the markets, which enables us to do homeschooling and be present to them. We choose to go to medieval fairs, which are events that are safe and interesting for them too.

FLEXIBLE LIFESTYLE

We were working in different countries, backpacking or living in our vehicle. We were working on an island with one tourist market a week; now we rent a house in France and sometimes drive several hours to attend a specific market... Some would travel to other countries to sell their moccasins seasonally... There are so many possibilities! What's for sure is that this work is flexible and easy to travel with.

THE FREEDOM AND SECURITY OF BEING SELF-EMPLOYED

Being self-employed, we can choose to organize our time like we wish to. Working on markets can be intensive, but usually just for a short time and/or seasonally. Self-discipline and dedication are required, but it is so much easier to work for a purpose, doing something you like, instead of slaving away for a boss you don't know... Thanks, God, who gave us the ability to set free from modern slavery.

"I've bought several tutorials from several Etsy sellers but this one goes above and beyond any others. Not only you get a pattern and a step by step written PDF pages, Lougaya has made video tutorials that make stitching her shoes easy and fun. Great for visual learners, her presentation makes you smile every step of the way."

Nadine

Heart Moccasins

"I love the "Runners" patterns so much, I also bought the "Moon" moccasin patterns. The tutorials are excellent and the patterns super user friendly. I was able to make two different pairs of moccasins in one weekend. I highly recommend Joa and Lougaya's site, they are responsive, kind, and have great products."

Claudia

The Runners and Laced-Up Boots

"I was hesitant at the pattern price at first before I understood how many patterns and videos you are getting. I have bought many many patterns, and while you need to customize these for your feet, I have never seen such clear and extensive videos on a pattern before. I highly recommend this, and I'm extremely impressed. I have made one boot and am just making the second now. They are SO comfortable."

Can One Really Make a Living From Selling Moccasins at Festivals, Fairs and Markets?

YES!

  • There will always be a need for shoes, especially if they are comfortable, durable, repairable and practical like moccasins are.

  • Many people are struggling to find shoes that are comfortable or just that fit them. With offering custom-fitted shoes, you are sure to fit most people that try them on, even the most unusual feet (wide, very thin, or longer than the other). "Aahaaa!" Guaranteed. You'll do much better than shoe shops.
  • In shoe shops, how many times does it happen that when you finally find a model you like, they are out of stock of your size? This rarely happens with the way we stitch the heel on the spot. Moreover, since you are the maker, it is easy to keep restocking your stall when needed. Overall, you'll be able to have more choice than a shoe shop without having to carry a massive number of shoes with you.

  • People are tired of buying shoes that don't last, are hardly repairable, and are not even really comfortable. They crave being comfortable in their shoes and are willing to pay for it. They will recognize the quality of your handmade leather shoes versus industrial shoes...

  • Barefoot shoes are getting more and more popular. Rare are those made from natural materials (breathable!) that don't get smelly and can withstand years of intensive wear, like moccasins. This product is, to a degree, unique.

  • There is barely anyone making custom-fitted shoes out there and very few craftsmen making quality shoes locally; in other words, you won't face much competition! That's one reason why you can ask a fair price for your work.

  • Compared to other crafts and/or other types of shoes, you can make a reasonable amount of money for your time. For instance, you can make a pair in less than 3 hours and sell it for $100 or more with material costs under $20. A few customers are enough to make your day on a market. Just think about the basket weaver, the wool maker, or even the food sellers... How much must they work to get a similar income?

  • One can get started with investing very little. No machines needed, no shop to rent; you don't risk much, even if it doesn't work as well as expected at first.

But...

Of course, if you really counted the hours, you would spend planning and organizing your markets, driving there, all the time spent on the market from setting up to packing up, as well as the time spent around the making, etc. You might end up thinking, Am I really making any money for my time? Is it worth it?

Well, we personally don't really count all of it because, more than money, there is the fact this work enabled us to break free from modern slavery. We do something we like, and we can organize our time like we wish to. We have time for our children to do homeschooling and watch them grow.

We do not fear a boss or worry about potentially getting fired from one day to another. We know that no matter what happens, we have a real manual skill, creating physical value, enabling us to face times of change and crisis confidently. Likewise, we know, no matter where we go, there will be work for us.

ABOUT US

Working hand-in-hand, as husband and wife

We are Joachim and Lougaya. We have been working together making moccasins as only revenue since 2018. First as travelers, now as a young family, we bring our children with us to the markets and work also from home. We started with almost nothing. Our stall was displayed on the ground; we lived under a tent... Gradually, we work our way up. Thanks to the Lord, our Savior, we never missed anything. We now live with more than enough, dedicating ourselves to serving God and raising our family, while still working both on local markets and on the internet.
Knowing what it is to struggle with money, we do our best to provide high-quality products and services at the most affordable price.

Lougaya started her business in 2016 after working one month in apprenticeship with an experienced craftsman in Australia. Starting was slow, as she had no funds, but it didn't stop her... Over time, besides selling on local markets, she specialized in teaching workshops and creating tutorials as well as drawing custom-made patterns.

Joachim joined her in 2018. He quickly learned to make moccasins and took it to the next level on the internet. Thanks to him, video tutorials were created, later a website... He is equally active in the moccasin-making than behind the screen to provide daily customer support and manage the online boutique in general.
