We come to the market with a stock of moccasins that are already stitched at the front but need to be fitted to people's feet. The focus is not on the length of the feet but the width. That gives us the ability to fit all morphology types easily (long but thin, short but wide, one foot longer than the other...). By doing so, we have more choice than in a shoe shop with much fewer pairs on the table. One pair of moccasins can cover 4 to 6 sizes, for instance.
In practice, we drive to the market, get the stall set up, wait for customers, and when someone is interested, they take their shoes off, and we advise them on the best pair for them, let them try. If they find a good fit and decide to buy, we take their measurements on the heel and stitch it directly. It usually takes us 20 to 30 minutes. They try again, and if we don't need to make adjustments, they go home with their new pair of moccasins directly. At the end of the market, we pack up and go home...
It really depends on the affluence of the markets and the types of markets you attend. In the past years, from spring to early autumn, going to more or less fifteen events that reach from 200 to 12 000 people over the weekend, we have made an average of 15 000 euros.
Another time, when we worked really hard on beach markets in Australia, we had gathered about 10 000 euros in two months with up to 4 morning markets per week, although they were not big markets... In weekend events that gather from 10 000 to 20 000 people, we've experienced selling for 2 000 to 2 500 euros, including upfront orders...
Of course, you need to take away the money that will go into leather, transportation, market fees, taxes, work time, etc. We'll talk about it in further detail in the course.
Some students do really well after just a few pairs of practice. That's for the basic stitching part. For the custom-fitting, you will need a bit more practice on various real feet... I have needed about a year of practice on small weekly markets and about 100 pairs to think; I really get it now! But you must start somewhere!
I have started with less than zero... I did a crowdfunding campaign to buy my first batch of leather. If you have a very low budget to start with, you can start with one leather hide at a time, and slowly work your way up. My first market stall was a blanket on the grass with about 10 pairs of moccasins... Over time, our stall was improved with a market tent, tables, chairs, some business cards, banners, etc.
Not really. There are some places, like flea markets and some farmers markets, where you won't be asked to have a registered business number. Otherwise, you can work in a "pirate" way, at festivals, in cafés or other places where you think you will find people interested in what you do and catch interest in stitching shoes publicly, for instance... Nevertheless, if you really want to have access to bigger markets and hold a proper stall, most market organizers will ask you to present a business registration. The most common business status is self-entrepreneur. I won't tell you much about this in the course because it is too specific to every country. Usually, you can get help with these administrative matters from the office in charge.
